December Events & Updates

December Events:

Kadomatsu & Shimekazari Making

Tues, Dec 03 - Off Base (Arranged Carpool Only) 9:30-11:30am

OSAY is kicking off the holiday season with a unique cultural event! Kadomatsu is a traditional Japanese New Year decoration featuring bamboo, pine, and plum branches symbolizing longevity, prosperity, and steadfastness. This seasonal decoration is placed at the entrances of doors or buildings to invite good fortune into the space.  In mid-January, local neighborhoods will host an outdoor ceremony where the kadomatsu and other decorations are stacked up in a pyramid-like shape and are set on fire. Mochi rice cakes are then roasted on this fire, and often oranges and sake are passed around to celebrate good health in the New Year. This event is exclusive to OSAY Members.

What to wear: Warm clothes you don't mind getting a bit dirty - we will be creating outside.
